92,372 CHILDREN IN THE COUNTRY...
…..are struggling due to different learning needs (The Star, 2021). That’s almost 1% of all Malaysian children, and doesn’t take into account those who slip past detection.
COVID-19 IMPACTED THEM
- According to a UNICEF report (2019), about half the total number of children with different learning and developmental needs do not attend school. According to a new UNICEF report, many parents of children with learning differences experienced a loss in earnings due to the pandemic, resulting in them being unable to afford essential early intervention and behavioral therapy (2020). Even when these children do go to school, they struggle later to enter the working world or begin tertiary education.
- Additionally, 14% of kids with differences surveyed claim their mental and physical health have regressed.
WHAT PEOPLE SAY…
“Teachers can make wonderful plans. But to what extent does the lesson reach the students?”
-Dr Grace Annamal, Senior Lecturer at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris.
“Future Sheltered Workshops should be tech-centred. We should move from physical jobs to those that are more intellectual and kinestetic like e-sports”
-Dr Logendra Stanley Ponniah, head of Taylor’s University School of Education
